Bus and Train Information for Sherborne

No matter if you don’t have a car or just want a few days car free, traveling around the area using public transport means you don’t have to worry about finding somewhere to park and someone else will do all the driving for you.

Sherborne is lucky to have its own railway station - one of only two towns in north Dorset with train stations. And exploring the rest of Dorset or neighbouring Somerset and Wiltshire by train or bus is easy to do.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the view!

Getting around by bus

The number 5 bus is operated by South West Coaches and travels between Yeovil and Dorchester via Sherborne. It stops numerous times within Sherborne town centre, so is useful for visitors who have mobility difficulties. Yeovil is located just over the border in Somerset and Dorchester is Dorset’s county town. Both have bustling town centres and history dating back to Roman times.

If Yeovil is your chosen destination, bus numbers Y4, 58 and 58A also travel from Sherborne.

If you are looking to explore other towns and villages in north Dorset, the Y4 bus travels to Blandford Forum via Sturminster Newton. Blandford is a Georgian market town with lots of independent shops and riverside walks. At Sturminster you can explore the Mill or go for a walk along the North Dorset Trailway

Some bus services may not run on weekends or bank holidays, so be sure to plan your journey in advance by using the Traveline website

Getting around by train

Sherborne Railway Station is on the mainline between London Waterloo and Exeter St. David’s.

The station is found on the edge of town within easy walking distance of the town centre, however bus number 5 travels through the town and stops at the train station.

There are a number of stations between Sherborne and Exeter including the market towns of Axminster and Honiton which both have stations within an easy walk of the town centre. The riverside cathedral city of Exeter is just one hour away and has a long and interesting history, as well as being Devon’s county town.

Heading in the opposite direction towards London, Gillingham is Dorset’s most northerly town with bus connections to nearby Shaftesbury. Further on and just 45 minutes away is the medieval city of Salisbury with its towering cathedral housing one of the four original Magna Carta manuscripts dating from 1215AD.
