The Abbey Church was mainly built in the 15th Century and has the heaviest ring of 8 bells in the world. The fan vaulted ceiling is a beautiful feature. Detailed information inside the Abbey and a choice of children’s trails available.

Summer – daily 8am to 6pm

Winter daily 8am to 4pm

Cost : FREE – donations welcome

Guided Tours Tuesday 10.30am and Friday 2.30pm. April – September . Private tours £3.50 per head. Contact the Parish Office.

Castle, Gardens, Shop and Tearoom open every day except Mondays and Fridays (but open Bank Holiday Mondays and Good Friday), Gardens and tea room open from 10am. Castle and shop from 11am, with last admission 4:30pm. Castle, tea room and gift shop close 5pm.

Sherborne Markets

Every Thursday and Saturday you will find home made goods and local produce at Sherborne Market in Cheap Street-  On the 3rd Friday of every month there is also a Farmer’s Market.  You can visit the WI Country Market on Thursdays from 9.15am -11.15am in the Digby Memorial Hall.

Find out about local life through the ages. Features include an oral history booth and the Sherborne Missal touch-screen display. There are displays of costume, gloving, geographical and archaeological exhibits to a fully furnished Victorian Dolls House. Special activities for children.

Built in the 12th Century, the Old Castle was besieged by Cromwell’s army during the Civil War and you can now visit the ruins, entering through the imposing gatehouse. Picnics encouraged.

Open Daily : 10am – 5pm or 6pm April to October. From 1st Nov, closed for winter.


 

Sherborne Steam and  Waterwheel Centre  Oborne Rd, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3RX

Probably the largest working water wheel in Dorset. Parking on site and lots of room for picnics.

2016 Open days : Sundays 20th March, 17th April, 10th May, 5th June, 10th July, 14th August, 11th September, 9th October.

Open: 11am – 4:00pm.

Enjoy a short guided tour to view this building which is over 500 years old and has a notable painted triptych.

Guided Tours between 2pm and 4pm, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday, 1st May to 30th September.

£2.00 per person to look in the chapel. Group guided tours can be arranged if notified in advance.


Cycle Routes

Pick up information from the Tourist Information Centre on the two cycle routes which pass through Sherborne.  Route 26 heads south to Dorchester and Route 30 takes you into Somerset. Also available are two leaflets showing cycle routes around Sherborne and an Active Travel map that give further suggestions for cycling locally

Swimming

Go for a swim in the Oxley Centre in Bradford Road. The pool is 25m and is open 7 days a week.

Town Trail

Discover Sherborne, our fascinating historic town, by following the route on the Town Trail map.  The walk is suitable for all ages and takes approximately one hour.  Pick up your leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre.
