Built on a grand scale in the 12th century by Roger de Caen, the Bishop of Salisbury, Sherborne Old Castle was coveted by churchmen and noblemen alike giving it a long, chequered history. After two sieges during the Civil War, the castle was left in ruins in 1645 and visitors to the castle today see it in its role as a romantic ruin in the grounds of the ‘new’ Sherborne Castle. Only the Southwest Gatehouse and parts of the castle including the Great Tower and the North Range survive.
